I10 Self Care Ideas for Moms Having a Hard Day

Being a mom is amazing, but some days are just really hard. Ive had my daughter every day since she was born over four years ago, with the exception of preschool for a few hours or appointments, she’s been with me. I’ve had time to figure out ways to take care of yourself as a mom. To help you get through the days when you’re tired and have more fun on the days you feel great. These simple self-care ideas can help you reset, recharge, and feel a little more like yourself, especially when the day feels overwhelming.

1. Take Frequent Regulation Breaks

Building a routine that includes points in the day where you can regulate will support you and give you the energy for daily tasks. Quiet moments, when everyone is settled with a low-key activity, or playing in their rooms, can be a incredibly helpful. Go to your garden or your favorite cozy spot in the house with a comforting snack and drink. Anything that makes you feel unrushed, where no one is asking for anything, and you can just fully be.

2. Have a Basic Routine Baseline

On days when you don’t feel on top of your game, a simple, go-to routine helps. Think nutritious breakfasts like seeded bread with boiled eggs and fruit, ready-made lunches or dinners (you can always add extra fruit and veggies), and basics like loading the dishwasher or clearing walkways. Take the pressure off yourself for anything else. A routine gives little moments in the day to relax and makes bedtime a space where you can really unwind.

3. Laugh About It

Yes, really, laughing can help. Even in stressful moments, finding the funny side of a situation can release tension and help your children feel calmer too. Your perspective can make overwhelming moments a little lighter.

4. Write It Down or Voice Note It

Writing, typing, or recording your thoughts is incredibly freeing. Your notes don’t have to make sense or solve anything, they’re just a space for your emotions. This practice helps you notice how your feelings shift throughout the day and can give you the pause you need to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.

5. Keep Snacks and Drinks Handy

You’re giving energy to your kids all day, so don’t forget to refill yourself. Healthy snacks, like strawberries dipped in dark chocolate, can be both nourishing and enjoyable. Keep cold bottles of water in the fridge, or natural sparkling fruit juice cans, so staying hydrated is effortless.

6. Plan Low-Demand Days

Some days, give yourself permission to do very little beyond basics and self-care. Slow mornings, mindful walks, and saying no to extra tasks can help you recharge. Focus on enjoying your home, the people in it, and your pets.

7. Put on Music That Matches Your Mood

Music that reflects your current feelings, whether the melody or lyrics, can help you process your emotions. Play it loudly if you have space, or use wireless earbuds if little ones are around. Music is therapy.

8. Then Move to Music That Lifts Your Mood

There’s something powerful about first validating your feelings through music that matches your mood, then transitioning to music that makes you feel happier. This natural progression helps regulate emotions and gives a subtle boost to your energy and outlook.

9. Focus on Your Senses

Engaging your senses can be deeply calming. For example:

  • Going barefoot outside (grounding)

  • Listening to birds through an open window

  • Playing with tactile objects like polished gemstones, therapy putty, or play dough

What works will vary for different people and different days. Find the sensations that feel soothing to you.

10. Pick Up a Self-Empowering Book

Books written by people who’ve experienced overwhelm, self-doubt, or a search for self-worth can be transformative. They offer inspiration, motivation, and practical advice. Some of my favorites include Manifest by Roxie Nafousi. Find books that resonate with you and help you align with your best self.

11. Treat Yourself Like a Partner in a Relationship

Think about how you would treat someone you love deeply, and do the same for yourself:

  • Say loving things to yourself

  • Buy yourself something you’d enjoy receiving

  • Wash your hair gently, savoring the smell and massage

  • Make a nourishing, delicious meal

  • Write a love note to yourself, imagining the life you want

  • Schedule a date for something you’ve wanted to do

  • Exercise you genuinely enjoy—like swimming or dancing

Closing Thoughts

Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. Small, intentional acts can help you feel grounded, recharged, and more connected to yourself, even on the hardest days. You deserve the same care and attention you give to everyone else.
